Owning a big luxury car may give an idea about drawing a line between the haves and have not! Have you reached the pinnacle of success? And if you happen to have, then did you have the acquired taste of luxury yet? Where is the flagship ride?
Our tester, Audi A8L 3.0 big, full-size, luxury sedan comfortably sits in the ilk of its brethren from the same neighborhood. The Mercedes S-class and the BMW 7 series. All are the prime definition of flagship ride. They all come with lots of presence and along with the presence is the authority. There’s always a full access pass granted to the people who ride in these cars doesn’t matter even if someone is a chauffeur, yet tricky and not dressed as one
Design By Scientific Emotion – 8/10
Having an Audi means you don’t have much to talk about its looks. Because you always live in a state of déjà vu. Scene one seen all. Unless your attention to detail is so excellent that can pick A8 from A6 and then A6 from A4. Perhaps this is because Audi may have a belief that once you have decided to own a luxury brand “Audi” then all is same, (I am only guessing). Still, A8L boast taut character and sleek profile looks awesome.
This Audi A8L 3.0 is an upgraded model for 2014. Hence there are big subtle changes all around that keeps it fresh in a tighter and restraint manner. One of the changes that would be hard to miss are the wing shape head lights. But before I move ahead. I would like to point out that Audi pioneered the LED lightening system. Unfortunately, I dare say that due many “me-too” that somehow included a string of LEDs ended up in an uglier way. Thanks to Audi that kept its calm and instead just using LED (since day1) just as a mere piece of ostensible looking accessory, Audi embed a technology in their headlight system called Matrix LED and stayed far ahead from the wannabes. Besides the usual daylight runners and low beam, there are intelligent cornering lights on high beam that is comprised of 25 smaller LEDs which functions by lightening up the open space and automatically dims or rather switches off when senses other drivers from the oncoming road to avoid sudden similar to strobe light burst in their eyes. With the bigger and bolder grille and revised taillights completes the newer refreshed appearance.
The First Class-Business Class – 7/10
The story is deep and impressive once you are inside the car. Everything is pleasant and there elegance than meets the eyes. The tastefully inviting Brown Valcona leather with contrasting beautiful dark wooden panels wrapped the combination of high gloss and subdued aluminum finish reflecting the high mark quality of the chosen materials. You can divide your travel experience just by choosing which area you wish to be: From the front seats to the rear, that gives an impression of a first class luxury jet liner. Even though the rear seats are as comfortable as a sofa. You can choose to drop down a huge center armrest creating a perfect 2+2 seating and can arrange a meeting as well. While the car rides on excellent dampers, almost any sort of NVH is well sustained, insulated and removed. Though smart luxury can be found everywhere: with ambient lighting system on the headliner to the lit up door sills. You access aircon control and other provided functions via an MMI dial on the center armrest. However, our tester is not the top model and hence the privileges of luxury were also curtailed. The available super-lux Rear Package that includes entertainment with 2 high-resolution 10.2-inch LCD displays; a separate single DVD player in the rear compartment; (costs at AED 15000) massaging seats were deleted.
Full Speed Ahead – 7/10
If the rear passenger compartment can be your highly modern business address. The front section is sure to make you feel like a captain of a star trek Enterprise spaceship. Sitting on a deluxe air-con/ heated seats with additional 22-way vast settings, depending on your mood, it’s no surprise you’ll stay in the commanding position.
All you need is to press your right foot to untap the powers of Supercharged 3.0 V6. This new revised motor now produces 310 HP and 325 lb-ft of torque. Though it’s the same engine that was installed in The 2014 Audi A5 Sportback 50 TFSI but had only 272Hp. However, surprisingly the feel is the same with linear acceleration as it takes 6.0 seconds for a 0-60 dash. That’s ditto to A5 Sportback 50 TFSI. Unlike the A5 7-speed S-Tronic transmission, Audi A8L is paired with 8 Speed Tiptronic and comes standard with The Dynamic Shift Program DSP that features the automatic operating modes D and S. If you choose the Comfort (efficient setting) via MMI rotary dial and you will be rewarded with an excellent 10.6/ 6.3/ 7.9 city/highway / combined in l/100 km. (Audi supplied figures) along with electronically Stop & Go function. This comfortable setting is the most efficient and hence all functions will get tuned down and so is the aircon chill-factor.
Here in the UAE, you may feel a bit of discomfort due to 40C + summer heat. For, the spirited driving pleasure I chose to keep the car in the Dynamic chassis setting with quattro permanent all-wheel drive as handling backbone, ensures engaging driving experience. Of course, needless to say, the fuel efficiency logs number, not in the same trend. Audi A8L rides on Pirelli P Zero 265/40 R, exhibits balance behavior on the twisty roads and provides excellent braking and low NVH.
Nevertheless, keeping all the figures in mind as numbers don’t lie, one fine evening I chauffeured my family and guests for a posh outing and there I felt lugging effect. For the first time, I felt I needed more power, though everyone enjoyed the excellent Audi A8L luxurious ride!
Active Safety – 8.5/10
Besides the all new Matrix LED headlights, and it merits in all directions already discussed in length. This flagship Audi A8L continuous to impress with the abundance of safety (also to be considered as added luxury). Audi active lane assist intuitively works by a camera in front of the interior mirror monitors the road to a distance of 60 meters and with an angle, roughly at 40 degrees reads the road marking. And if the driver tries to be a snob and changes lane without the turn signal being activated, the system warns the driver to steer back into the lane by subtly intervening in the electromechanical steering. The driver uses the MMI to determine how soon the intervention should occur and whether it should be accompanied by a steering wheel vibration and a warning tone.
Audi active lane assist also intervenes if the car is in danger of skidding. It supports proper counter-steering by briefly boosting or reducing the degree of power assistance. Together with Audi side assist, the system is also activated in the event of an impending collision with a vehicle in a parallel lane. Then comes my favorite adaptive cruise control. Also, exclusively featured is The Audi pre sense safety system. This is available in a number of different versions in the new A8. In the standard version, Audi pre sense basic, upon detecting an unstable driving situation via the sensors of the ESC electronic stabilization control system. Intelligently, Audi pre sense makes sure that the front seat belts are tensioned by small electric motors and that the sunroof and the windows are closed down to a small gap. The hazard lights automatically warn the traffic behind. And last but not the least: The head-up display. I would also like to notify you that all electronics and LCD alpha-numerals are clearly visible even with the polarized sunglasses.
A Buyers Guide to The Luxury – 7/10

The standard infotainment wishlist includes a radio a DVD drive, a DVD/CD changer, a digital TV tuner, two card readers and a triple tuner, comes as standard, as is the Audi sound system. It comprises a six-channel amplifier with 180 watts of power and ten speakers. A hefty a 60 GB hard drive with the navigation data. A powerful graphics processor generates top-quality, three-dimensional images. All above features may be unheard before, however spending time in Audi A8L 3.0 made me felt like: I am a top level company executive and I am rewarded with this car worth approximately AED 335,000/ and that’s maybe the max company can bestow upon me. Everything but bit restraint! With my money, I would, however, go for Audi A8L fire breathing V8 bi-turbo 60 TFSI, blowing out 435 hp. Starting at AED 385,000/, perhaps I’ll be the leader of top level execs, and the sky’s the limit!
Audi discontinued the old 3.0 nomenclature. By the time you walk into showroom this car may be available as re-badged Audi A8L 50 TFSI quattro
