2018 Accord First Drive – Honda’s Jewel in the Crown.
The all-new 2018 Honda Accord is changing the mindset & setting the new standards for the future
2018 Honda Accord was launched just last week alongside with the Gold Wing GL1800 bike and Rearview Mirror was given an exclusive early bird opportunity to test drive the car along with topmen from the manufacturer to assist and answers all the questions thrown at them. Honda test drive sessions run on the convoy-carcade manner albeit other manufacturer does allow individuals to breakthrough and do their own bit. Having said that, there was enough time available along with some empty stretches to let the car loose and get the sense out of the vehicle’s dynamics.
This 10th gen Honda Accord has come a long way. Honda has maintained the Accord position very well since its inception back in 1976 when the first generation was introduced. Accord is always the jewel-in-the-crown of Honda and it was revered in the same way. It is worth noted that Accord nameplate is 40 plus years old and never once Accord went on hiatus. Instead, today’s 10th generation Accord itself commemorates its own continuous improvement. No surprises then, Honda sold an astronomical 19.9 million Accord across the globe. that’s just a shy under the ginormous figure. So today, anyone who has placed the order for the new Accord, the figure could turn to 20 million mark!
Design wise the all-new 2018 Accord harks back to euro design ’97 which came from the marriage of Rover 600 having a coupe-like rear deck. However, in present-day format, the 2018 Accord has an edgy looks sleeker silhouette and a bolder stance. This certainly makes the new 2018 Accord stand out from the crowd of look-a-like sedans which often used for public service as taxis rather than a personal choice. The 2018 Accord has the new Honda signature appearance: premium feel from the chrome wing grill and the 9 LED front headlights. Bolder looks from the sculpted tangents on the side taking the shape from the tail lights and dissolving into the front fender. Both 1.5 turbo and 2.0 turbo Sport model have blessed with the similar size and styled 18inch alloy wheels. In contrast, the 1.5 LX and EX-trims are complimented with 17-inch alloy wheel. Honda, also ensures that the new 2018 Accord has a very distinctive full LED taillights which will make it more recognizable.
Inside the cabin feel is upscaled. this new 2018 Accord felt a premium car when seated inside. The materials quality and the fit and finish is on par. On a first drive session, the word is delightful! Interestingly, the newly designed cabin is inspired by the vast multi-tier stadium. This creates the openness and spread-out sleek design while keeping the lowered profile at the same time. Standing on top next to the leather stitching, softly padded dashboard in the 8inch touch-screen which Honda refers to as “Display Audio”, however, features vary according to the trim level.
To enhance the premium feel inside the cabin Honda has gone to next level to achieve the quietest cabin. From acoustic laminated windshield glass to Acoustic spray foam on the A, B & C pillars sealing off the hollow portions on the body structure and an acoustic tape is applied to reinforce the reduced NVH application. Furthermore, noise canceling speakers also installed inside the cabin to ensure the cabin is properly sealed from the humdrum and drab outside traffic noise, which gives a pleasurable drive.
2.0 Turbo Sport
Even though there was no shortage of the drive & display car, yet I opted for the 2.0 Turbo Sport to drive first. Strangely enough, the all-new 2018 Accord 2.0l I4 engine is a detuned version of the fire-breathing hot hatch the Civic Type R. This all-new 2.0-liter direct-injected VTEC Turbo with dual VTC puts out 247hp and at 6,500 rpm and 370 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. Paired with an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission, Accord engine is smooth and purred and comes with the Normal/ Econ & Sport driving mode. However, to answer my excitement, 2.0 single-scroll turbo is lag less.
I was doubting about the long 10-speed shift program, it was seamless and definite: the correct gear at the right time. 0-60 wasn’t intoxicating yet it was in mid 6 seconds. As I mentioned above there some empty stretches and fast sweepers available, I was happy to find the satisfying behavior of the car. The body roll was sustained while zipping through the bends and the large disc brakes provide a confident stop.
Besides the exhilarating driving experience, the 2.0 Accord Sport is also complimented with the host of features which set it apart from the smaller mill 1.5l Turbo. To start with 2.0 Accord comes with a standard Head-up display, paddle shifters and yes this Accord is without any conventional gear stick, in fact, Accord moves with staggered sets of buttons on the center console. 12-way power adjustable driver seat, Electric Parking brake with Brake Hold feature, 8″ Display Audio with touch-screen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Also includes safety feature which is a part of Honda Sensing that includes Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) including Pedestrian Detection and Head-on Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) – Integrated with RDM Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow (LSF). These are only some of the features, otherwise, it’s a mile long list which conforms to a stellar price tag of AED139,900.
The 2018 Honda Accord has raised the bar, It’s, in fact, a premium car on its own, you won’t experience this car on the road as a taxi, you have to own one to have a long lasting experience as other 20ish million customers had. It’s not an upgraded car, but from the ground up made to meet the future requirements. Today 2018 Honda Accord is a standard for others to follow!
1.5 Turbo Sport
Force induction is nowadays way forward for all the car manufacturers. Modern day engines include futuristic technologies which keep the performance to the elevated level along with the high fuel economy. Ditching the conventional 2.4l 4 cylinders famous engine. The base 2018 Accord is equipped with the smaller 1.5l Turbo engine, introduced in the Civic RS. However, the application is optimized to meet the Accord’s requirement. This base Accord is also equipped with CVT transmission and with G-Shift Control.
Interestingly I liked 1.5 more! Even with CVT and having the only 198hp at and 260 Nm of torque from 1,600 all the way to 5,000 rpm it was more natural than the 2.0 turbo. The speed transition felt more linear, unlike the surge from the 2.0 Turbo. Also because it was a basic Accord Sport and was devoid of many nannies that come standard with the 2.0 turbo model. The car felt more tossable and fun. Yes, I am not going to win any drag race here, still, as a daily driver, it was quite satisfying.
Since 1.5l Turbo comes with the stick shift (CVT) – I have a habit of resting my hand on the stick shifter. Naturally, I was quickly in-tuned with the conventional setup. In the case of choosing the which car to buy, I don’t think that gear-stick Accord or non-gear stick Accord can tip the buying decision on either side it’s just getting used to with the thinks and sign of times. Also to be noted that despite the fact that 1.5 Accord Sport has fewer features doesn’t mean its under-equipped. there are still many features which are ahead of the outgoing model. Should you like to trim and price your 2018 Accord, I have included the table below.
The 2018 Honda Accord has raised the bar, It’s, in fact, a premium and a near-luxury car on its own, and you won’t experience this car on the road as a taxi, you have to own one to have a long lasting experience as other 20is million customers had. It’s not an upgraded car, but from the ground up made to meet the future requirements. Today 2018 Honda Accord is a standard for others to follow!
