2018 Honda Jazz – The Supermini
Can 2018 Honda Jazz retain the supermini crown?
Honda Jazz is a kind of car that smart husbands would usually buy for their wife as her first car. But the interesting bit starts when the kids, usually boys would steal their mums’ car and enjoys the timeout with their friends. Honestly speaking that was my story right up there. There is so much that these superminis could offer that kids (I should say teenagers with driving license) would use to enjoy the
hooligan drive around the city. The supermini is easy to zip through the traffic congestion and tight streets, easily accommodate everyone with their paraphernalia and with the most important factor – less dent on the pockets as they were so frugal on the fuel that even scanty wallets could afford it. Realistically, what college going teens would go through in their lives the superminis were a part and parcel of that time.
Having moved to the UAE, I observed, not too often people here, when they are shopping for a car they are looking for the smallest or a compact car. Because this is the size of a car they have left in the garage in their home countries before coming to the Gulf states. The natural choices are simple to buy a bigger car with more premium options as -1 the fuel prices here are
not that higher and 2- the affordability. However, times have changed, just like anywhere the subcompact class or the supermini as they are commonly known as already made quite in-roads in the market these cars are now nicely equipped and the going gets tougher with the increase in the competition.
People are making conscious decisions now. MBA has taught almost every one of us the phrase “Value for money” and that’s what everyone is looking after. And this exactly what Honda Jazz is been providing since it was introduced back in 2001. Al-Futtaim Honda has provided this opportunity to test drive and review the car the new 2018 Honda Jazz.
The 2018 Honda Hazz arrived at MyRVM garage in the Brilliant Sporty Blue Metallic color with just 001359km on the odometer. This 2018 model year is the third generation (GK) and it was first introduced in 2001 (internally known as GD). Here in the Middle East Jazz has arrived as 2018 MY actually a facelift and which was introduced in 2014 in the other markets around the globe where Jazz is also known Honda Fit. However, the most important thing that Honda is offering to its customers that this is a made in Japan car and this should be enough to suffice. At the showroom floors of Al-Futtaim Honda, Jazz comes in only one EX trim level for AED63900.
The plan was already in place and just need to turn the key of the new 2018 Honda Jazz. So let’s find out what Honda Jazz has to offer and we’ll put the Jazz through our 4 segmented scoring system.
Stylish Appearance – 8.0
The 2018 Honda Jazz is complimented with the fresh styling. it has new Honda’s signature wing-like front grille which gives a wider look and clear headlamps which makes it look like more Hondaesque. Even though this is a compact car yet there are sporty touches like dark contrasting fog lamps and nicer looking 16″ Berlina black alloys rims. In the back Jazz is fitted with large taillights that make it resembles like SUV.
The 2018 Honda Jazz has a unique styling and this is not new. Jazz was first etched and it is still carrying the same egg-type profile because of critical reasons. Not only it gives Jazz a funky styling flare but its also very practical. The tall profile creates a lot of space inside the cabin and even taller people can sit comfortably. Thanks to the longer wheelbase where the front wheels are positioned right at the corner this allows an increased leg space as well.
Thanks, to the Honda’s new design philosophy of ‘man maximum, machine minimum’, Jazz is quite an efficient vehicle is it class providing the best-in-class space for occupants and cargo through smart packaging solutions, one which is an innovative Magic Seats system. Consider this example that there 4 modes in which you can design your own cabin space according to your need and desire. yes, desire as well which I will elaborate later. From Utility mode to Tall mode where you can easily park a small cycle standing up behind the front seats as well. And then Long mode which can make all seat down expect the driver and you have the whole cabin at your disposal. but how about “Refresh mode”. This mode allows the driver to recline full and makes a complete bed from the rear seat to forward seat. So in an event where you are tired of driving you can park the car aside get yourself on the rear seat and with refresh mode setting you can even sleep well for some time, Voila!
In this EX-trim level, Honda Jazz has a rather cool and snazzy looking dashboard. There’s a driver-selectable info center within the Instrument Pod which can be accessed from the advanced multifunctional steering wheel. A very clean flush digital Aircon control, though I didn’t like touch-to-operate AC, would rather prefer some real tactile buttons. in the center of the dashboard, Honda has fitted a large 7″ inch Display Audio touchscreen providing extra information and Bluetooth mobile connectivity, however, feels a bit short on the performance and feels slow to respond. Still, on the plus side should anyone live to watch a movie then its possible via HDMI connection and remember there’s a Refresh mode available to enjoy this function.

The Ride – 7.5
I have always some extra liking for hatchbacks. To me, they are like personal objects like a wristwatch or a ring perhaps a bangle. The idea is they are small and usually simple that you eventually know every bit about them, or perhaps becomes friends with them. This is the time you enjoy driving them the most. Predictable handling becomes a second nature and moreover, you know their limits as well. How does Jazz drives, I would like to draw a comparison with a market heavyweight Toyota Corolla 1.6L, this 2018 Honda Jazz is fitted with a similarly sized 1.5L Direct Injection i-VTEC engine that produces a decent 130hp @ 6600 Rpm and 155Nm of torque at 4600 Rpm The engine is mated to efficient Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with G-Shift control. The larger Corolla’s 1.6l produces meager insignificantly low 121 hp and 154nm of torque.
Of course, Jazz being small and lightweight makes a perfect recipe for a fun-to-drive city runabout with a plus point of steering mounted paddle shifter that enables more manipulative driving. I enjoyed the car driving through the narrow streets of Dubai. It’s easily tossable and when needed to brake, Jazz comes to a halt quite assuringly.
Safety – 7.5
All the new Honda’s are made on the Honda’s latest ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure technology to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility, Jazz is no exception this technology. This means that Jazz’s minimum safety features which will outrun other competitors. consider these host of Honda active-safety features like the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Anti-Lock Brake Systems (ABS), Electronic Brake Distributor (EBD) and Hill Start Assist (HSA), Whiplash Lessening Front Headrests and Driver and Passenger SRS Airbags for added protection.
Buyer’s guide to the galaxy – 7.0
The 2018 Honda Jazz is a playful nifty hatchback. It is well equipped with smart features, from cabin space management to USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity and of course HDMI input as well. However, the market competition is quite high. This compact car segment is quite a busy segment here in the UAE. Yet Jazz comes with the biggest backing of assurance today in the automotive market, which is the Honda badge itself. Moving forward from the relief the brand, Jazz is a supermini with all the basics right along with bragging certificate-of-honor that reads made in Japan. AED 63900 made my head spinning. I am still finding hard to pick the weight if this price tag because when I know Honda has a brilliant new Civic which starts from AED 64900
