2018 Honda Odyssey arrives in the UAE
Honda Odyssey, the benchmark in the family van segment just got higher.
Honda Odyssey wasn’t the first-of-its-kind vehicle in the family van segment. From the iconic Volkswagen Type 2 microbus to modern-day Dodge Caravan and Chevrolet Astro and Ford Aerostar to name few were always there. However, because of their multifaceted business requirement: from airline crew van to cargo van, all of them were less focused, until Honda Odessey arrives at the scene back in 1994 providing a pure family van experience. This created a special place for Honda Odyssey in the customer’s mind and just like any other Honda on the road, Honda never let their customer’s expectation buried down.
Honda launched the all-new Odyssey in the US and Canada early this year and as the production got eased-off Odyssey finally setting its foot here in the ever-growing middle east market as the fifth-generation model. With record sales record around the world of 2.7 vehicles sold through its 4 generation time-line. This time around Honda Odyssey is poised again by introducing many industry-first features not only to the region but also to the eagerly awaiting families (customers) around the world.
Mechanically based on the Honda Accord‘s platform which incorporates the new smart Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure, which is a Honda-exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crashes compatibility in frontal collisions. The body structure consists of 59% High Strength Steel and is 34KG lighter than the outgoing model. This improves body stiffness and rigidity by 44%, providing excellent dynamic capabilities.
The new ACE body structure also benefited Odyssey in many folds. it provides the quietest cabin in its class. with new upgraded suspension, Honda believes that driving Odyssey will more of an enjoyment of experiencing the performance while exerting less pressure. With low center-of-gravity that not only provides car-like driving experience but also keeps the body roll in-check naturally. The all-new 2018 Honda Odyssey also integrates “Man Max and Machine Min“ formula, which is clearly visible in the form of small and low Odyssey frontend and a maximum space for the occupants to sit in comfort for their journey by not increasing the size of the van.supports better The Odyssey can easily accommodate up to 8 passengers and a multitude of cargo in different shapes and sizes.
Whoever owns a family van or an SUV knows that providing access to the passenger is a real Achilles heel. Large and heavy middle row is a herculean task. But not this time as Honda has finally provided a genius solution to the old cumbersome problem. It’s called Magic Slide that provides countless options to move and adjust the middle row just by removing the center seat from the equation. Once the center seat is removed it allows a quick access to the third row as the two seats can be brought together. here are some of the few options that Honda has highlighted during the presentation of the Odyssey launch.
The 2nd Row magic slide seats can be customized into four different positions
- Full Mode: In this mode, the Odyssey can accommodate 8 passengers comfortably with ample head and leg room
- Wide Mode: With the center seat removed and two outboard seats in their outermost positions, this mode provides a wide center walk through the third row.
- Super Mode: With the center seat removed, the outboard seats slide laterally through five selectable positions allowing for easy access to the third row with one or two rear-facing child seats installed in the second row. The centermost seat also slides forward to allow easy access to the child to the front seat.
- Buddy Mode: With the center seat removed, the outboard seats are next to each other in the center of the vehicle, putting two people in close proximity and within easier reach of the front seat occupants.
If you think that was enough of an effort of a playing jigsaw with the seats by Honda then you’re mistaken. Honda is bringing the new technology introduced for the first time ever. This is the focus that Honda was keen on and other’s actually lost it over the period of time. ‘Honda CabinWatch’ is a good feature where a driver can monitor on can keep an eye as A camera with night vision allows the driver and the front passenger to view the rear passengers or kids on the Display Audio Touch Screen. Another neat feature is the ‘Honda CabinTalk’ which allows the driver to talk easily with the passengers in the 2nd and the 3rd-row seats. Using the vehicles speaker systems or the wireless headphones it also overrides the headphones plugged into the 3rd-row seats of the rear entertainment system.
The all-new 2018 Honda Odyssey comes with a powerful naturally aspirated 3.5-liter direct- injected i-VTEC 24-valve SOHC V6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). The engine is mated to an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission (10AT) with Shift-By-Wire (SBW) and Paddle Shifters producing 280hp @6000rpm and a torque of 355Nm @4700rpm. Interestingly this 10-speed tranny is Honda’s own in-house designed and manufactured gearbox. Why Honda took all this pain? simply, Honda believes that they can do better and Honda engineers know how to best pair an engine and the transmission together. This 10-speed tranny has a smaller gear ratio and Honda has assured that during the performance driving mode the transmission can kick down as many as 4 gear ratios to provide the optimally required gear for the situation.
The Odyssey’s material quality is upgraded. The new and soft-touch instrument panel, which includes a full color and an interactive, Stop Start button, Electronic Parking Brake with Brake Hold function, ventilated seats, and a new push-button gear selector. In addition, a new 7-inch Digital Driver Information Interface with direct sight to the driver ensures that relevant information such as phonebook, fuel consumption; remaining distance, select app control, turn by turn direction when using the navigation and even Honda Sensing (touring grade only) are accessible and easy to read.
Also standard in across the entire range is the inclusion of features that are not only for the driver but also for the front passenger. Cruise Control, Illuminated Vanity Mirrors (Dr and Asst), Map Lights, Ambient Console Lighting, Rear Window Defroster, Conversation mirror with Sunglass Holder, Driver’s Seat with 8-Way Power Adjustment, Front Passenger’s Seat with 4-Way Power Adjustment, Ventilated Front Seats and Power Windows. Moreover, Honda has added for the first time, Active Noise Cancelling System, Acoustic windshield, and thicker door glass make the Odyssey the quietest in its class.
Safety is also one the highpoint for Honda motors. 2018 Odyssey is full of such active and passive safety features to assist the driver. This safety net in Honda’s parlance is known as Honda Sensing. This highly advance technology suite includes Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation System. Blind Spot Information System, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor, Pedestrian Detection System, Lane Keeping Assist System, Head on Collision System and my favorite Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).
