Porsche Boxster S – A Speedy Take.
Being perfect is a state of mind and it’s the biggest compromise to mankind, at times no matter what we do, the only element that seems to make a situation perfect is a Miracle! When Porsche arranged a short take on the Boxster S, it came with a set of instructions. Having a time limit of 9 hours was on top, subconsciously the p e r f e c t started to slip away…
But Miracles do happen. Here is a list of what transpired to get to that perfect state:
Weather: Clear & Bright, Check
Temperature: Pleasant, 23 Deg Celsius.
Route: Dubai to Fujairah, via the ever scenic Kalba Road, Check
Traffic: Minimal, approx 15 cars per minute.
Drive: 2014 Boxster S, loaded to the brim with options.
We arrived fashionably late at Porsche Center Dubai to take delivery of the car. The iconic showroom, which once housed Porsche, VW & Audi, has now been commissioned solely to the marque by Al Naboodah Automobiles. It famously held the biggest Porsche dealership globally for 8 years. Nevertheless, in Dubai things work in a different manner, instead of taking beatings of the time and aging gracefully, to become a modern classic, things just get wiped out from their place. Hence very soon a brand new futuristic looking Porsche Dubai Centre is opening up across the road.
Classic Roadster – 8.5
Great things come in small packages. The Boxster is a fine example, taking the design inspiration from the Porsche Magnum Opus Carrera GT. Although the current design is completely fresh, it retains the classic silhouette harking back to the mid-nineties when the Boxster was first introduced. The light weight, blithely and airy feel are the required elements to create the perfect roadster.
The new Boxster is blessed with the design characteristics of its premium stablemate. Sitting above the three air dams of the bumper are the front headlights which reminisce of the electrifying hybrid Porsche 918. Thanks to mid-engine design ‘that classic silhouette’ is pronounced by two air scoops sculptured beautifully on either side of the car doors. The all-new LED tail lamps are perfectly integrated into the rear apron, their contour set apart by the seamlessly blended electric spoiler. The signature look completed by the centrally placed twin-flow double tailpipe, exclusive to the Boxster S.
Our Boxster was adorned in full leather interior package in natural leather Carrera Red accentuated by aluminum appliques. The Carrera GT inspired upward inclined center console, ending at the PCM touchscreen. Everything you touch and feel is premium. The cabin is tight or should I say tailor-made as we did not feel any discomfort. Furthermore, there are a couple of cup holders neatly integrated into flush fitted aluminum stripe above the glove box. The door pockets can keep a bottle of Masafi as well. Beyond two occupants anything else will be considered as crowded!
Sit low down inside the bucket seat and turn that fixed starter key…

Porsche DNA – 9.0
We have seen plenty reiterations of the 2 seater Sports Convertible by various automakers, albeit going falter, but not this car. Primarily because the Boxster was designed ground up as a Roadster while other rolled variants of their existing coupes. Even with the roof down there was no apparent loss in rigidity. Scuttle and shake totally eliminated irrespective of the road surface, even though Boxster sans a major component these days: the metal hardtop.
Our test drive, Boxster S was equipped with the optional dual clutch PDK, Porsche Dopplekupplung gearbox (not a tongue twister), and Sports Chrono Pack. This adds gimmicks like dynamic engines mounts, a center mounted Chronometer, 3 different gearbox modes/ drive settings and most importantly Launch Control. The launch control can easily engaged by switching the PDK into sports +, depressing the brake with the left foot and flooring the throttle to the max. See the Rpm needle swing past 6000 Rpm, the words Launch Control then appear on the steering mounted display panel. From then on it’s just a matter of releasing the brakes and hanging on for dear life as the car lurches forward decimating 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds flat. What’s amazing is the punishment these new dual clutch systems can endure, repetitive launches having no effect on performance or timings and dare I say to the car hinges. An expensive but worthy fun-packed option if you ask us, even it means parting with one of your spare kidneys.
This naturally aspirated 3.4L flat 6 boxer engine happily sings all the way to 6700 RPM to deliver peak 315 Hp. However 360Nm torque is available from 4500 RPM helps the initial grunt. On our favorite switchback roads near Wadi Helo the mid-ship placement of the engine played a pivotal role in enhancing the driving experience. The behavior of the car was neutral, inspiring confidence in the driver for optimum driving pleasure, thanks to the relentless grip provided by the 19” Pirelli P Zeros. The car’s attitude can be altered by the 3 available driving modes, accessible via buttons placed on the center console. Each selectable mode bringing a different flavor to the driving experience. Also worth mentioning here are the 4 piston front and rear stoppers assisted by the Porsche Torque Vectoring system (PTV) which helped us reach the car’s limits without requiring a change of underpants at any given point.
We drove the Boxster S for almost 300 kilometers, with top up we never felt wind noise rushing in as the canvas top seals effectively into it’s catcher points. While, cruising top-down we never had to raise our voices either.
Safety – 7.5
The Boxster S packs a host of safety features, like sonar sensors and more airbags than you can count. Roll over protection in case of unfortunate happenstance, also the innovative PSM which pre-charges the brake pads when you lift off the throttle anticipating your next move. Although passive systems like blind spot detection, rear view camera, and our favorite radar cruise control are nowhere in the equation. Perhaps, we were too busy enjoying the drive to notice.
Buyers Guide to the Galaxy – 9.0
Porsche Boxster S delivers a premium driving experience, making it a quality sports car. Our test drive came equipped with Bi-Xenon headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), a heart pounding Bose sound system and worry-less superb fuel economy (8.0 L /100 Km). It’s a roadster par excellence and enough goodies to reflect a sensual life style. Expect to pay AED 220K for a base example and nothing short of AED 280K for an example like in the pictures.
Having reached Fujairah we enjoyed a cup of chai and journeyed back keeping the time constraint in mind. Weary, high and dry, by sighting the Porsche Center our hearts sank. However, recollecting the memorable journey, the only consolation bringing a smile to our faces was believing that Miracles do happen………. perfect!
