Refreshed and Revitalized 2016 Honda Accord Coupe
Back in early 80’s growing up in Pakistan was oh-so-easy. I was spoiled for choices in the cosmopolitan city of Karachi. Being the business hub means you’ll get the access to everything you can imagine. However, in terms of cars, you can either choose a Japanese car or a Japanese car instead.
Yes the only way to see an American auto, you’ll have to wait for a whole week to view the airing of the episode of Fall Guy where Lee Majors was seen driving a 1982 GMC K-2500 Wideside pickup truck and then later it was replaced by KITT 2000: a highly modified 1982 black Pontiac Firebird T-top model driven by the towering David Hasselhoff in Knight Rider.
The situation makes the scenario quite boring. However, one brand always stood-out in my eyes and that was Honda! Surely there was a magnetic element in Honda products. Modern, innovative and stylish. The Civics were more in tune with youthful creed and the Honda Accord like its name best suited for debonair. Still, Honda kept a special treat for individuals having indulgence and passion beyond the routine. And that’s the Honda Accord Coupe. Symbolic for its clean yet captivating design and sporty performance to inspire. I always have a special place in my heart for the Accord Coupe.
Here in the UAE, Honda re-launched its existing Accord Coupe that was introduced in 2013 as the 9th – gen model, refreshed again for the 2016 model year with a host of new features to keep the Accord Coupe as the premium performance car in the D segment market. Also to be noted that Accord Coupe will be the first car in the region that features Honda’s active safety system called ‘Honda Sensing’. More on this, but let’s start with the design first.

Even though the exterior body design remains the same as this is a mid-cycle update, yet the 2016 Honda Accord feels refreshed and revitalized. Based on the Honda’s ‘Exciting H Design’ philosophy which revolves around three key noteworthy elements: HighTech, which creates and unmistakable identity of the car just like BMW’s double kidney grille.Honda now has a ‘solid wing face’. The new 2016 Accord Coupe has a restyled front bumper with LED fog lamps. The headlights also use LED lighting (3.5 V6) with daytime running lights are now piped LED. To enhance the sporty character the front grille is finished with dark chrome. A similar treatment is applied in the rear where the newly redesigned taillights stylized with piped LED for superior visibility.
The ‘Exciting H Design’ play a key role inside the cabin as well with the HighTouch element. The 2016 Accord Coupe is again upgraded with finer materials and premium feel. I felt the cabin is airy yet it had the sporty cockpit feel. This is the result off of the third and the last element called HighTension which provides form and function inside-out.
The highly visible, easy to read out the large instrument binnacle. The dashboard also features a double tiered hi-tech 8-inch primary TFT Intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) touch screen providing all access in the center and a secondary smaller screen on top as well that provides other vehicle data. There is no denying that engineers have spent a good amount of time keeping the ergonomically design. Everything is in its right place. The push buttons for HVAC are simple and easy to understand. I had a brief moment keeping myself inside the cabin yet I found the electrically powered adjustable memory sports seats are comfortable and supportive.
The highlight on this all-new 2016 Honda Accord Coupe is the launch of the new feature called ‘Honda Sensing’. In fact, Accord Coupe will be the first car to be sold here in the Middle East that comes with Honda Sensing, which incorporates four active safety factors. My favorite Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and then Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) followed by Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), an early bird warning system alerting the driver if there a potential of collision is felt and then automatically applying the brakes if driver response is slow. Lastly, the fourth one is the Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) System, where the computer feel if the driver is swaying of the lane a vibration is sent to the steering wheel to alert the driver and in the later stage RDM uses the torque and braking to keep the car going straight in the lane.
No surprises then, the Accord Coupe also has received the highest available crash safety ratings and a 5 –Star Overall Vehicle Score from NHTSA and a similar rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the IIHS (when equipped with CMBS) in the United States of America.
