The 2015 Infiniti Q70 – A Business Class Saloon.
The big Infiniti Q70 arrived in the Rearview Mirror garage for the review. Though, it’s the same car that used to bear the M37 badge now bare with the same and wearing the new Q70 badges. Nonetheless, whatever the company nomenclature policy, what we have here is a refreshed exterior design. Infiniti says that the new design is more than evolutionary as it is emotionally engaging.
Having a solid all-round market appeal in the US, since ’89, and enjoying a strong loyalty here in the Gulf region, Infiniti now engraves its footprint in Europe. And if you’re a F1 fan then you must be aware that the Infiniti claimed 4 times World Championship title. Keeping the present timeline in mind, I thought it’s going to be a wonderful drive!
Attractive Appearance 8/10
Nuance it may seem form far, but when you move towards the Q70 it draws you more closely with its elegant yet charismatic appearance. Gone are the organic/ dolphin inspired design. The new taut character lines hide the bulbous-ness and enhances the svelte aesthetics.
The best bit has to be the front end… the new double arch mesh grill along with sleek yet sharp, powerful headlights clearly set apart from the previous M37. In the night time, the signature LED headlights gives a stunning look. The same treatment is applied at rear lights as well. Hence, more than ever the Q70 is easily recognizable be it day or night.
It was a terribly hot day when the Q70 in Moonlight White was delivered, this aggravates a certain discomfort: a perturbation as humidity starts fog the spectacles and feeling of getting melted. Thankfully the deliveryman parked the car under the shade. I opened the door to see inside the cabin and whoa! That was the expression I was greeted. I was truly taken aback with beautiful cabin. The interior is sculptured rather than fitting with slabs of plastics mixed with leather. In Q70 you have your own personal business-class space which appointed with the finest and exquisite premium materials. Java Leather which is finished in a shimmery coating with White Ash Silver-Powdered Wood. The classic feel continued with centerpiece beautiful analogue clock!
The car rides on a long wheelbase, which means it is designed to be driven to cover long distances with comfort. Hence passenger in the back seat has ample legroom and enough space for three adults to sit in comfort. What’s more the ride is made more pleasure when you choose “Forest Air” on to fill your senses with fresh pine fragrance. Albeit for the fact that the time I received the car, the fragrance had reached the ebb.
The Soothing Ride – 8.5/10
Continuing with the cabin design that is part of the driving experience there two factors which are essential for any driver before moving on: the first one is the seat adjustment that I found is quite a feat once the door is closed. I usually wear the watch on my left wrist and I found it due to door cladding design, it is difficult to get my hand slide down to reach out for the seat adjustment levers. So I had to open the door for the ease of access. Secondly, once the seat is adjusted I found myself unable to get in the correct driving position.
You see, when I adjusted myself with arms reaching out to hold the steering wheel comfortably, then I was struggling to rest my feet on the brake and accelerator pedal. Why? Because, usually the steering column has console fitment that comes out of the dashboard and is approximately about 3-5 inches in length. However, here in Q70 there were two console covering that has increased the distance from the dashboard by almost 6 inches as standard. This means you can further pull the steering towards your chest, but can’t push back-in to dashboard to increase the distance in relation with arms on the steering wheel and feet reaching out the brake & pedal.
Once nestled in the comfortable aircon quipped seats, the driving experience is pleasant. As the heart of the Q70 is tried and tested 3.7l V6 aluminum-alloy DOHC 24-valve engine is equipped with Variable Valve Event & Lift (VVEL), pumps out 329hp at peak 7000 Rpm and 363NM of torque. Though the heft of the car is felt right away, yet whilst moving on I, hardly felt the need of additional power, as Q70 has the optional 5.6l V8 picked out from the Goliath Infiniti QX80 that is rated at monstrous 402hp and 550 NM of torque. Needless to say that, should you opt for the bigger lump, do remember that with extra power it provides it has to carry the extra weight of its own. The engine is mated with 7 speed electronic manu-matic transmission and can be programmed according to the driver desire as Infiniti Drive Mode Selector that allows drivers to select from varied driving modes – Standard, Eco or Sport and returns a superb 9.0l/ 100km fuel economy. For more spirited driving the gear changes can be done via behind-the-steering wheel paddle shifters made of solid magnesium. The end result confirms the Q70’s athleticism, by reaching 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds.
Thankfully, Infiniti engineers were clear about the ride quality and that is the core objective of the car. Q70 chassis is fine tuned with Independent double wishbone up front and independent multi-link and the rear. Both ends are further pinned down with stabilizer, and anti rollbar. Our tester was equipped with 18 inch double spoke alloys and shod with Dunlop 245/50R-18 not only provides ample traction, but at the same time helps soaking up the road imperfections thus providing real soothing and comfortable driving experience.
There’s no denial that Infiniti goes step further to ensure safety, by introducing Infiniti Safety Shield to provide layers of safety curtains that constantly monitors road condition ahead to the driver’s behavior as well to not only reduce but also to avoid imminent collision. The segment first, innovative 360-degree Around View system that generates a bird-eye view help parking fuss free in the tight spaces. A very helpful feature here, while reversing, as the let-go policy is nonexistent here. The system also detects Moving Object Detection and Backup Collision Intervention keeps the driver alerted.
Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems help keep the Q70 from unintentionally drifting into an adjacent lane in case the driver is distracted. Blind Spot Warning, with Blind Spot Intervention actively intervenes by selectively braking if the driver ignores both visual and audible warnings and attempts to steer into the path of the vehicle in the blind spot.
My all-time favorite is the radar controlled Intelligent Cruise Control. However, there’s another safety feature that Infiniti is bragging about is the Forward Collision Warning, which actually scans up to cars ahead and warns preemptively for the potential risk. In my experience on more than two occasions the FCW system got activated using it predictive sense, but then I was unable to engage cruise control after that. So I had to park the car on the side, cut off engine and re-started or rebooted the car again to delete the warning and back to normal driving condition. Not sure whether it’s normal or maybe it requires resetting the system by visiting back to the Arabian Automobile dealership. However, fear not, as most of the features can be turned off as well as per driver’s desire.
A Buyer’s Guide to the Luxury. 8.0/10
Infiniti Q70 falls in the very tough segment and is undoubtedly dominated by German giants followed by Lexus, Cadillac and Jaguar. But interestingly the key point here is that Infiniti has its own individuality. Infiniti is not shy about its design characteristics. The smooth drivability along with agility and prowess.
Q70 (3.7 V6) is a fine car and I’ve given my opinion of not upgrading to the top-dog engine. Having said that you can enjoy the premium comfort inside the cabin. Would you believe that there’s an Active Noise Control microphone installed in the roof to reduce the noise inside the cabin. Yet on the other hand the Q70 can be turned into a theatre with Bose audio systems include the Studio Surround sound system with digital 5.1-channel decoding and 16 speakers, two of which are mounted in the shoulders of each front seat.
Infiniti Q70 makes a compelling case in the competition. There are times when customers complain about a good car they buy but are not happy due to wrong selection. This leaves you as an Infiniti individual! A reason why Infiniti enjoys a strong loyalty from its customers here in the Gulf region, and I happen to agree.
One of these days, walk in to any Arabian Automobiles showroom, an exclusive Infiniti dealership here, and you’ll be in a treat to know that besides the price range starting from AED 169,000 – AED199,000, there is a remarkable offer available.
