The all-new 2018 Ford Expedition
The big utilitarian is refreshed and energized with more power & technology
Just a week ahead of 2017 Chicago Auto Show Ford has revealed its full-size SUV, the 2018 Ford Expedition. Traditionally Expedition is based on the F-150 Pick platform, which means Ford is now successfully extending the line-up of its vehicles based aluminum body panels. This simply means the new 2018 Expedition is 300 lbs lighter in weight to return more performance economically.

The performance task is delegated to the all-new next generation 3.5l V6 Ecoboost is already started to perform duty from Ford GT supercar to Ford 150 and the bigger Super duty trucks. Expedition now comes with standard Auto Start-Stop and mated to an all new class-exclusive 10 speed automatic, Ford believes this is the most capable full SUV in the market today. According to Ford’s study, more than 50 percent of its customers prefer hauling and towing capability and Ford has answered their wish by equipping Expedition with Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which makes backing up a trailer as easy as turning a knob.

Other utilitarians in this gargantuan class especially, Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol not only provide good towing capability yet they are highly competitive performers when exposed them in the challenging environments in endless desert sands or climbing the slippery hills. To match them Expeditions has a newly available electronic limited-slip differential on models with intelligent 4WD enables improved off-road capability by sending power where it’s needed. The good thing is Expedition now comes with all-new Terrain Management System that lets customers choose between drive modes for optimal vehicle handling in different conditions. This includes normal for around-town driving, sport for more spirited trips, tow/haul for improved towing and hauling performance, eco for enhanced fuel economy, grass/gravel/snow for loose terrain, sand for low traction situations, and mud/rut for uneven surfaces.
At this point, Ford has avoided revealing any numbers that would complement performance figures. Perhaps, maybe on the floor of Chicago Auto show?
Styling wise, it’s an amalgam of its little sibling Explorer (front bumper), F150 (headlights) and the front grille suggest some styling cues from the boxy Flex. Unlike the F-150 which has the cascading beltline on the front door which helps outward visibility, the new Expedition has a taller beltline making it appear more protective. Personally speaking, it will take some time to grow on me. It’s not an instant two thumbs-up!

To make the driving experience more effortless expedition is equipped with more than 40 features and driver-assist technologies new make the journey enjoyable. From the latest SYNC 3, with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, allows drivers to stay connected on the move and SYNC Connect lets owners connect with the vehicle remotely using FordPass to start, lock, unlock and locate their vehicle from anywhere, while also allowing access to important vehicle diagnostic information.
The rest of the 7 passengers can enjoy the host of features that include Wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot supports as many as 10 devices at once, up to 50 feet away from the vehicle Dual-headrest rear seat entertainment system provides a next-generation video experience that allows passengers to view their home cable programming on either of two video screens or hand-held devices. Power for passengers in every row, with four 12-volt power points, six USB chargers and a 110-volt power outlet that lets passengers stay charged and connected 12-speaker B&O PLAY premium audio system perfected by acoustic engineers for a sound experience even audiophiles will appreciate.
The all-new Expedition is available in XLT, Limited and Platinum series. In addition, an XL version is available for fleet customers, from law enforcement to emergency services. To help customers choose the right amount of interior room for their families, all series are available on the extended-length Expedition MAX.
The all-new Expedition is part of Ford’s plan to grow its SUV leadership with five new vehicles for North America in the next four years.
The all-new Expedition arrives this fall. It is built at Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.
